I'd like to see it completely outlawed but improving the welfare standards for the dogs is better than nothing.

This is the latest RSPCA campaign...

~~~
Every year at least 10,000 greyhounds are retired from racing. The fate of many of these greyhounds is unknown and huge numbers simply 'disappear'.
We believe that the health and happiness of thousands of racing greyhounds is very poor. Welfare issues can occur at any life stage, so we believe that all aspects of the greyhound industry, from breeding to kennelling, racing, transportation, management and final retirement need to be improved. We want to see greyhounds protected from cradle to grave.
An opportunity to protect racing greyhounds
The Government has launched a public consultation on the regulation of the greyhound racing industry in England with a deadline for submissions on the 22nd July 2009.
Please take action today!
We really need your help to demonstrate the rising tide of public unease about this important welfare issue. We want to get at least 20,000 people responding to the government consultation, to call for the protection of racing greyhounds from cradle to grave.
Cubicle 7 - John Wick Announce Partnership [Jul. 10th, 2009|12:10 pm]
Cubicle 7 – John Wick Announce Partnership
Cubicle 7 Entertainment and John Wick are pleased to announce they have signed a publishing agreement. This partnership will see Cubicle 7 bring award-winning author and game designer John Wick’s games to a wider audience through distribution and retail stores.
“I’ve enjoyed John’s games ever since he designed 7th Sea and Legend of the Five Rings for Alderac Entertainment,” said Angus Abranson of Cubicle 7 “I carried on following him when he left the mainstream industry, set up his own company – Wicked Dead Brewing Company – and produced some fantastic games such as Cat and Thirty. It’s an honour to now be able to work alongside John and help bring some of his newer, and future, games to the wider audience they deserve.”
HOUSES OF THE BLOODED is the first book to be published through Cubicle 7: a game of Ambition, Lust and Revenge. Thousands of years ago, the ven ruled the world. They were a passionate people, obsessed with Romance and Revenge, opera and theater, and all the forbidden delights their decadent culture provided. In the end, that which made them beautiful was also the key to their own destruction. Houses of the Blooded is a game about tragic obsession. Set in the fantastic world of ven myth and legend, players take the roles of powerful characters bent on conquering their world, destroying their enemies and possessing all they desire.
“I'm very excited,” said John Wick. "My end goal has always been to get as many people playing my games as possible. My partnership with Cubicle 7 will help make that happen."
About Cubicle 7 Entertainment Ltd
Founded in 2006 Cubicle 7 Entertainment was set up by Angus Abranson and Dominic McDowall-Thomas, two gaming entrepreneurs who wanted to create a games publisher fostering some truly iconic brands. Since then the company has published role playing games from a growing list of properties including Victoriana, SLA Industries, Starblazer Adventures (based on DC Thomson’s 80’s Starblazer comic series), 7th Circle’s Chinese fantasy Qin and is releasing Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space, under licensed from the BBC, in October . In June 2009 Cubicle 7 announced it had joined the Rebellion Group. You can find out more at www.cubicle7.co.uk
About John Wick
John Wick is the co-creator of Legend of the Five Rings and 7th Sea, both of which have won Origins Awards for both Best Roleplaying Game and Best Collectible Card Game. He founded the Wicked Dead Brewing Company with Jared Sorensen and recently started John Wick Presents! as a company devoted to creating games for adults, children and families. Swine flu: I may get it, but I just don't get it [Jul. 10th, 2009|11:59 am]
egadfly
Could somebody please explain the fuss about swine flu? From where I'm sitting, it looks like one more case of the media being evil, government being craven and ordinary people being moronic. In other words, business as usual.
The World Health Organisation says flu kills 250,000 to 500,000 (that's right - half a MILLION) people every year. Remember the panic about this fearsome killer last winter? Neither do I. So what's different now?
We've heard that this flu might mutate and become super-deadly to humans. That's true; a few times each century a more lethal form of flu comes along. Any strain of flu can mutate. Could swine flu become the next death flu? Yeah, maybe.
But is there any evidence that swine flu is more likely than other strains to mutate into death flu? If so, I haven't seen it. Is there any evidence that swine flu is more contagious than regular flu? Not that I know of. Is there any evidence that swine flu is more deadly than last winter's flu? If so, no-one's told me.
So why are the papers printing panicked reports about the, ooh, thousands of infected people in Britain, when hundreds of thousands of us get flu each year? Why is the NHS suddenly refusing to see people who have flu-like symptoms?
Maybe it's the name. Perhaps it reminds us of bird flu, which really was super-deadly (only it wasn't communicable from human to human, so didn't spread much).* Maybe people think pigs are yukky, so swine flu must be worse. I know what: I'm renaming it "teddy bear flu". There you go. It's all better now. Cretins.
People have died of swine flu and will continue to die and that's very sad. But it's nothing new. Meanwhile it looks to me as though the media are peddling irrational fear to make money, and people, being irrational, are buying it. The government doesn't want to say "hey, chill", because there's a tiny chance swine flu will be the big one. But, seriously, everyone: chill. Or produce some evidence to support your fears. Otherwise you're a moron.
Ko Lien Hua Ying = Flowers Shadows behind the Curtain : sequal to Jin Ping Mei [Jul. 10th, 2009|10:55 am]
robot_mel
I found this book in the second hand section at the big Waterstones on Gower Street. I'd never heard of a sequel to Jin Ping Mei (though suspected that like Hong Lou Meng there were quite a few). This one was translated into German, then translated from German into English and then abridged, so I didn't have very high hopes. The first translator Franz Kuhn had found 20th century editions of the text that and was able to trace the text back to the original author of jin ping mei, however to me the tone and style of the two stories is so different I don't think they could have been written by the same person.
Jin Ping Mei is basically a 17th century porn novel. Rumour has it it was written as a murder weapon, a drop of poison was put on each corner of the page and then it was made as racy as possible so that the person reading it would quickly turn the pages and die. It is also the story of one man's rise to power, his lust and increase in wealth and women and degradation till finally things catch up with him and it all goes horribly wrong. This book was the continuing story of those that survived the first book (one of Hsi Men's wives and her son) and the next reincarnation of his other wives where they were punished for their previous lusts.
The biggest problem with the book was that it was written by a total misogynist (much more so than the original). Instead of punishing His Men, the main character/villain of the story who murdered and seduced everyone, he was hailed as a hero and it was the women who were treated to dreadful degradation and punishment for their (mostly unwilling) participation in the previous book. Instead of a long rise and then a fall, here the characters were already fallen, as a poor widow Moon Lady was repeatedly robed and had to flee, other characters had brief periods of happiness but it went down hill quickly, and so there was no real arc to the plot no building of suspense or interest.
One good example of the author's views about women can be summed up in the first paragraph of the twenty-third chapter
Experience has invariably proved that it is unwise to allow young women to indulge in worldly pleasures and to show their faces in public. Such liberty encourages them to behave in a manner which not only gives rise to malicious gossip but leads to unpleasant consequences even disaster. It is far better to deny them any liberty and keep them contained to the women's apartments (295).
While this attitude is common within the moralistic writings of the period, it is unusual to see it written out so blatantly in a novel. Novel's, particularly at the end of the Ming dynasty, praise romance, and the strength of women, their abilities, rather than their inabilities. A large portion of this book concerns Buddhist nuns and monks, and to me it seemed to have been written by a lay Buddhist who was writing a moralistic text. (I guess the cultural equivalent would be if a very Christian author wrote a sequel to the Marquis de Sade or Dangerous Liaisons). There was very little sex in this book, and what there was was done with little description or inventiveness (this may be the fault of the translation, but as the same people worked on Jin Ping Mei I doubt this explanation). The characters who were interested in sex had little depth and motivation, and they all realised the errors of their ways and turned to Buddhism.
The depiction of religion in this book was one of the most fascinating things about it. One of my favourite parts was talking about the unscrupulous nun who had a cult of maidens following her who practiced all kinds of magic, divination and exorcism. It was interesting to see the staunch male Buddhist condemning such active women's unorthodox religious groups. Belittling them for their dishonesty and sexuality, while at the same time talking in enough detail about such groups to understand their strengths and appeal (277).
The other very interesting thing about the book was that it was set at the fall of the Ming and so there were repeated invasions by Manchu forces that added a feeling or terror and uncertainty. It's the only novel I've read that has been set during this period and that made it very interesting to see people's reaction and how the turmoil affected every-one's lives from high families to the beggars.
This book is a far cry from Jin Ping Mei, it's author is by far the most misogynist Chinese classical author I've read, the plot is disjointed and there are far too many characters. But it was still very interesting to read, not so much from an entertainment point of view but the historian in me found it fascinating.
Post-physio [Jul. 10th, 2009|10:54 am]
s0b
So this morning was a little uncomfortable.
A flying visit from [info]dreamfire followed by a surprise visit by [info]lucifiction and then M meant I bounced around the house on crutches rather more than perhaps I should have done. Combined with the physio session that did hurt quite a lot and a trip round to see [info]lydiamorgan I was, perhaps, a little more active than I should have been.
I hurt - enough, I think for one of the stronger painkillers in the house.
In the mean time, here is the Professor Morpheus Remix of Scooter covering The Sisters of Mercy
LJ v FB [Jul. 9th, 2009|11:14 pm]
vexen
[Tags|, ]
[bored yet? | tired]
One major advantage that LiveJournal has over Facebook, is that you can enter HTML markup into updates, therefore encouraging writing rather than just waffling.
Second major advantage is that LJ archives everything, and you can go back and read all old stuff. That's such a useful and valued thing - you don't realize how important it is, until you over-use Facebook and then realise that all those great conversations are lost in history!
Combining the above two items, in LiveJournal you can link to previous entries from current ones, creating a hyperlinked network entries.
In most areas apart from these, though, Facebook is much easier to use, more fun, and more versatile.
P.S., of the 41 people who started this classroom + physical training course, 16 have been sent away for medical reasons. The longest hospital-stay of a course attendee is one week, and, tomorrow is the biggest physical test yet. Wish me luck! Also... after the gruelling work in the morning, we have a test on the classroom work we've been doing (think: self-help business-management type stuff - sometimes useless, mostly meaningless, and common-sense to anyone with a brain).
